PSC appointment — booking guide
If you need a Public Services Card and have never had one, you must attend a SAFE registration appointment in person. The wait time depends entirely on which region's appointment system you book into — not on the Department's national queue.
How appointment booking actually works
You book your SAFE appointment through MyWelfare.ie. The booking system shows you all PSC centres with available slots within a radius of your home address. Critically, you are not restricted to your nearest centre — you can book any centre in the country with availability.
Step-by-step
Log in to MyWelfare with your basic MyGovID
You don't need a verified MyGovID account to book a PSC appointment — the basic one is enough, because verifying you is the purpose of the appointment.
Go to "Get a Public Services Card"
Available at services.mywelfare.ie.
Enter your home address
The system shows you available slots at centres within roughly 50 km of that address.
Pick the earliest slot
Slots that fall further from home are often available much sooner.
Typical wait times by region (2026)
These are working averages, not official figures — based on MyID's monitoring. Update yourself by checking the booking system live.
| Region | Typical wait (2026) | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Dublin | 3-6 weeks | Some city-centre slots have longer waits; outer suburbs often shorter. |
| Cork | 2-5 weeks | Cork city longer than county. |
| Galway / Limerick | 2-4 weeks | Suburban centres often quicker than city centres. |
| Smaller midlands and regional centres | 1-3 weeks | Often the fastest route if you're flexible on location. |
| Northwest and donegal | 1-3 weeks | Usually has same-week availability. |
What to bring
- If you're an Irish citizen born in Ireland: a current Irish passport, OR a current Irish or UK driving licence.
- If you're an Irish citizen born in Northern Ireland or the UK: current passport OR birth certificate plus current driving licence.
- If you're an EU citizen (other than Irish or UK): current passport OR national identity card.
- If you're a non-EU citizen: current passport OR a 1951 travel document.
- Address proof: a utility bill, bank statement or government letter dated within the last 3 months showing your name and address.
2026 PSC centres use biometric scanners that match your face against your passport photo. You must bring your physical, original passport. Digital copies and printed photos will be rejected and you'll have to re-book.
FAQs
Can I attend without booking?
No. PSC centres are appointment-only.
What if I don't have any of the documents listed?
Contact the Department of Social Protection in advance — in some cases (homelessness, refugee status, missing documentation) alternative verification routes are available.
Can I bring someone with me?
Yes, but they cannot answer questions on your behalf. The SAFE registration is for you specifically.
