PSC renewal in 2026
A Public Services Card is normally valid for ten years. When it's close to expiry, you'll need to renew it. As of 2026, much of the renewal can be done online if you already have a verified MyGovID account.
When to renew
The Department typically writes to you 60-90 days before your PSC expires. If you've moved address since your last PSC was issued, that letter may not reach you — if your PSC is older than 9 years, check the expiry date on the card itself.
The online renewal route (most people)
If you have a verified MyGovID account (not a basic one), you can usually renew online without an in-person appointment.
Log in to MyWelfare
Go to the Public Services Card Renewal page.
Confirm your details
Address, phone, email. Update anything that's changed.
Submit a new photo
The online renewal flow asks for a fresh head-and-shoulders photo, taken against a plain background. The system rejects most non-compliant photos — if it asks you to retake, follow the on-screen guidance.
Confirm
The new card is posted to the address on your account. Allow 7-10 working days for delivery.
The in-person renewal route
You'll need to attend an Intreo Centre appointment if:
- Your MyGovID account is basic, not verified.
- Your name has changed since your last PSC.
- Significant identity details have changed.
- The online photo system rejects your photo repeatedly.
To book the in-person appointment, use the same flow as a first-time PSC — see our PSC appointment guide.
If your PSC has already expired
An expired PSC can no longer be used as a form of ID and cannot itself be used to verify your MyGovID account. You can still renew, but you'll need to follow the in-person route (the online flow requires you to confirm details on the existing card — which doesn't work if it's expired).
What changed in 2026
- The Social Welfare and Other Matters Bill 2026 expands the situations in which a PSC can be used — banks, utility providers, and age verification for older customers may all accept it from later in 2026.
- Card-holders will be able to add their date of birth to the card so it can act as a proof-of-age document.
- The Irish Council for Civil Liberties (ICCL) and Digital Rights Ireland have raised concerns about this expansion — see our PSC controversy page.
