MyGovID account locked
A MyGovID account locks itself temporarily after a small number of failed login attempts — this is normal security behaviour, not a sign that something is broken. Most lockouts clear themselves within 15-30 minutes. If yours doesn't, here's what to do.
If you've just been locked out
Wait 30 minutes. Don't try to log in during that time — each failed attempt can extend the lockout. After 30 minutes, attempt one careful login with the correct password.
If you're not certain of the password, don't guess. Use the forgot password flow first. Repeated wrong-password attempts will extend the lockout.
If the lockout isn't clearing
If you've waited an hour and the account still won't let you log in, the lockout has either:
- Escalated to a manual-review state — this can happen if the system thinks there's a credential-stuffing attempt against your account.
- Been triggered by activity from a different IP or country — same cause.
In either case, you'll need to contact MyGovID support via the official Help and Support page to lift the lock manually. Expect a response within 1-3 working days.
How to avoid the next lockout
- Use a password manager so you don't guess.
- Set up a recovery email so you can reset rather than re-attempt.
- If you've changed phone number recently, update MyGovID immediately so 2FA failures don't get counted as failed logins.
If you got a "your account is locked" email but you didn't attempt to log in, someone else may have tried to. Once you regain access, change the password immediately and review the recent-activity log on your account.
