MyGovID 2FA code isn't arriving

Published 2026-05-31Updated 2026-05-31By MyID Editorial

Verified MyGovID accounts require a 6-digit code sent to your phone every time you log in. When the code doesn't arrive, it's almost always one of four causes — check them in this order.

Check 1 — The phone number on the account

If you changed your phone number and didn't update MyGovID, the code is being sent to a number you no longer use. You'll need to update the number through your MyGovID profile or via the MyGovID app's account-management section.

Check 2 — Signal and carrier delays

SMS delivery in rural Ireland or on certain carriers can be delayed by several minutes. Wait 10 minutes before requesting another code. Requesting too many fresh codes will trigger a rate limit on the account.

Check 3 — SMS spam filters and blockers

Some carrier and phone-level spam filters block automated SMS from short codes. Check:

Check 4 — You're requesting too many codes

If you've requested several codes in quick succession the system will rate-limit you. Wait 15 minutes before trying again. The earlier codes you ignored may still arrive after the delay.

None of the above — what next

If you've waited 30 minutes after a single code request, the phone number is correct and current, and you've checked all spam filters, the issue is on MyGovID's side. Contact the official Help and Support. They may need to manually reset your 2FA setup — expect this to take 1-3 working days.

I no longer have the phone

If the phone number on your MyGovID is permanently lost (lost device, cancelled SIM, moved country and changed number), you cannot self-recover. You will need to verify your identity through another channel, which usually means visiting an Intreo Centre in person. See forgot password for the related "lost-everything" scenario.

Tip

When you next have access, set up a recovery email on your MyGovID account profile. It does not replace 2FA but it gives you an extra recovery channel for password resets.
