MyGovID server errors

Published 2026-05-31Updated 2026-05-31By MyID Editorial

"500 Internal Server Error", "502 Bad Gateway", "503 Service Unavailable" — these are server-side errors, not problems on your phone. They mean MyGovID itself is having trouble, briefly or longer.

How to tell whether it's just you or everyone

  1. Try a different network

Switch from Wi-Fi to mobile data (or vice versa). If it works on one and not the other, the issue is at your network provider, not MyGovID.

  2. Try a different browser or device

If MyGovID loads on another device on the same network, the problem is in your original browser (cache, extensions). Try clearing the browser cache or open a private/incognito window.

  3. Check our outage log

If we've seen multiple confirmed reports, we'll have it logged at /issues/outages/. We log start time, services affected, and resolution time.

  4. Check Downdetector and similar

External outage trackers will spike when a national service has a real outage. They're imperfect but they confirm whether you're alone.

What each error code means

CodeWhat it meansWhat you can do
500MyGovID's server hit an unhandled error processing your request.Wait 5 minutes, refresh. If it persists for more than 30 minutes, the service is having a real problem.
502 / 504A piece of MyGovID's infrastructure between you and the application server is failing.Same as 500 — wait and refresh. Usually clears in under 10 minutes.
503MyGovID is in scheduled maintenance OR has been temporarily taken offline by overload.Maintenance windows are typically posted on the MyGovID homepage. Otherwise refresh after 30 minutes.
"Network error" / no responseYour connection didn't reach MyGovID at all.Network problem on your end — check Wi-Fi or cellular signal.

When MyGovID has a known outage

Outages happen. MyGovID is a high-traffic service serving 2.3 million accounts. When it's down for everyone, there is no useful action you can take from a phone or browser — the only thing that helps is for MyGovID's engineering team to fix it.

If you have a deadline (filing a Revenue return, submitting a welfare claim with a closing date), document that you tried to use the service during the outage. Most state services treat a documented outage as a valid reason for a same-day extension. Screenshot the error message with the timestamp visible.

FAQ

Will my data be lost during a 5xx error?

Anything you submitted that returned an error was probably not saved. Wait until the service is up and resubmit.

Can I report an outage to MyID and have it added to the log?

Yes — email tips@myid.ie with the time, the error you saw, and the browser/device you were on. We corroborate with other reports before logging.
