Change your MyGovID email
The email on a MyGovID account is the anchor of the account — it's used for the username, password resets and notifications. Changing it correctly takes about five minutes. Doing it wrong can lock you out for days.
The safe way to change your email
Log in to MyGovID first — with your CURRENT email and password
Don't try to change the email if you're not currently able to log in. If you can't log in, see forgot password first — you'll have a much harder time changing the email later.
Make sure you have access to the NEW email
Send yourself a test email and verify you can open it on the device you'll be using for MyGovID.
Go to Account Settings (or your profile)
Look for an "Edit email" or "Update contact details" option.
Enter the new email and submit
MyGovID will send a verification email to the new address. Click the link in that email within 24 hours to confirm.
Wait for the confirmation email
After you click the verification link, MyGovID sends a "your email has been changed" notice to BOTH the old and new addresses. This is normal and important — it lets you spot an unauthorised email change.
Test the new email by logging out and back in
Verify the change worked before closing your session.
If you've already lost access to the old email
You cannot change the MyGovID email through the normal flow once you've lost access to the old one. You'll need to contact MyGovID support via the official Help and Support page and verify your identity through an alternative channel (usually in-person at an Intreo Centre).
Set up a recovery email NOW — while you can
If your MyGovID account doesn't already have a recovery email set up, do that as the first thing after you finish changing your primary. A recovery email gives you a way to reset the password if you ever lose access to the primary email later.
One of the most common identity-theft tactics is for a scammer to change the primary email on an account so they can lock the legitimate owner out. If you receive a "your MyGovID email has been changed" notification and you didn't make the change, log in immediately (or use the link in the notification), change the password, and contact MyGovID support to report the unauthorised change.
